Tiny Navajo Reads: Sea Glass

Sea Glass by Maria V. Snyder

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

sea glassThe next in the Glass Series that takes place in the world of The Chronicles of Sitia and Ixia, we see what happens now that Opal has discovered that she can drain a magician’s power from them, and uses it against those that would harm her.

When word reaches the Council, Opal is ordered home to house arrest till the Council decides whether she is a threat to Sitia or not, due to her new power. Disobeying this order, Opal heads to the Moon Clan lands to find Ulrick, who she believes to be her true love. The only reason for “believes” is because the Blood Warper who tortured her for her blood in the Study Series and again in the last book has told her that they have switched souls and now Ulrick loves blood magic more than he loves her.

As Opal travels to not only find Ulrick, but to stop blood magic from becoming a threat to herself and Sitia again. But when she finds Ulrick, she finds that he not only likes being more than a “One-Trick Wonder,” and that no matter what she says, he won’t listen to her. Finally returning to the Citadel and the Council, Opal finds that she is now under arrest and no one believes her concerning her reasons for going after Ulrick or that blood magic is still active in Sitia. Hurt by the Council’s actions and words, especially those of her mentor, Second Magician Zitora, Opal decides that she has to become like sea glass, her edges worn and tossed with the sea, but going forward with her own decisions.

We see Opal change even more in this book, becoming harder and a little bit less naive concerning her magic and who she should be trusting. With Blood Warpers after her, and Opal still trying to figure out who to trust, we see that things aren’t always as they seem with her and her life, and Opal learns that sometimes, she needs to do what is best for her.
