Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham

Now, as I have stated before, I love retold fairy tales, and if I haven’t mentioned it before then I’ll say it here; I LOVE retold fairy tales. And to see all the fairy tales that we love and know in a contemporary setting trying to hide from “mundys” and live their own lives, this is just such an interesting and compelling twist.
Fables was recommended and loaned to me by an awesome co-worker who seeks to make me as comic nerdy as he is and I intend on letting him do so. As you can probably see where this is going, all the fairy tales that we grew up with are now here in the real world. They were pushed out of all their respective homes by someone called “The Adversary.” There’s not much else we know of them at the moment, only that they have conquered the lands of those in fairy tales.
Snow White is divorced from Prince Charming, who turns out to be a complete ass who leeches off everyone. She is also the force behind their government that supports Fabletown, which is hiding in New York. As you read, you’ll see familiar faces and hear familiar names. Rose Red (whom I’m assuming to be Red Riding Hood) is Snow White’s sister and her apartment has been discovered to be trashed and covered in her blood. The sheriff of Fabletown is the infamous Big Bad Wolf, now known as Bigby Wolf and is charged with finding out what the hell happened to Snow White’s sister.
As we travel through Fabletown, we can see that not everything is peachy keen. There are still troubles in this land of myths, especially now as they have moved to our world and they can’t risk being seen and letting mundies know that the fairy tales they read growing up are real.
As they work through the suspect list, Snow White and Bigby Wolf show us what the world of fairy tales has come to, and we see that they’re not too much different from ourselves. They are the same as us, they just live longer and have an even looser grasp of their money.
What sort of retold fairy tales have you read? Did you enjoy them, or were they a little forced? Comment below and let me know!
