Within the Sanctuary of Wings by Marie Brennan
♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦
The very last memoir of Lady Trent, we see the culmination of her life’s work, and how much it has changed the world. And I love that! We get to see Lady Trent grow from a young woman going to Vystranna, to the experienced woman she is now in this final book. Now, onto the review!
In this final book, someone comes to see Isabella about what may be a new species of dragon. One that has never been seen before; and it in the mountains between Yelang and Vidwatha, which has Scirling military outposts. The only way to find it is to follow the man that came to Isabella with the news, a man who was hired as a mountaineer to find a way through the mountains by the Yelangese.
As Isabella, her husband Suhail, and her college and friend, Tom Wilker make their way up the mountains in order to find this new species of dragon. Once there, they discover that the small specimen the man brought to Isabella’s attention is, in fact, a new species of dragon. At least, one that they have only seen in carvings and statues in ruins in all their travels; Draconeans. Humaniod dragons, bipedals dragons, people that have the wings and heads of dragons! But before they can do much more than just revel in confirming that this ancient race lived, an avalanche descends and Isabella is separated from the others. When she next wakes up, she is in a hut with three…Draconeans. What happens next is amazing, as Isabella is confronted with legends and learning that they are more than what they were ever depicted in ruins.
As Isabella learns about this new race and culture, she learns that everything she and her husband knew about the Draconeans is different. Not exactly wrong, but whenever there are two sides of the story and you have only heard one, hearing about the other side is always hard and causes a shift in perspective. And as Isabella learns about this, she learns that the Draconeans save her for a particular reason, and that reason is soon coming to a head as the winter moves on. It’ll take a lot, and more courage and grit than anything else Lady Trent has ever done, but she’ll do it to save the dragons.
I won’t spoil the ending of this series, and this particular book, but I loved this series! I love Lady Trent and all that she does in the name of dragons. And I love how we can see the transformation and growth that she goes through. It is my goal to own ALL of these books in hardcover and they will be a prominent place in my eventual library.
