my hero academia vol 1Yes, yes, I know…I have finally jumped onto the My Hero Academia bandwagon and I am so glad that I have! And I can only say it’s really because of a graphic novel club that I’m trying to get going at my work for my teens. They did say that they wanted a graphic novel club, so I’m trying to give them what they want. But I got what I wanted as well! My Hero!!!

What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested superpowers called “Quirks” at age four? Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Being a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? The Hero Academy of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless?

Middle school student Izuku Midoriya wants to be a hero more than anything, but he hasn’t got an ounce of power in him. With no chance of ever getting into the prestigious U.A. High School for budding heroes, his life is looking more and more like a dead end. Then an encounter with All Might, the greatest hero of them all, gives him a chance to change his destiny…

This was a such a strong beginning to a wonderful manga! I love this series, I love this book, I love just how much Deku wants to be a superhero. This is a wonderful look into a world where people start to develop “Quirks,” or abilities that allow them to act out some of their wildest fantasies of both heroism and villainy. Unfortunately, there are a few people who are born without a Quirk; they are Quirkless. Deku is one of the few born Quirkless and yet he still strives to become a hero some day.

This is a manga, so we don’t get the full story (obviously), but we do get the start of the story of Deku and All Might. And I love that we see where that story has began, and I have read far ahead, so I know where the story is going, so I’m excited to keep reading and writing and reviewing.

Have you guys heard of My Hero? Have you read the book/watched the manga? Does it sound like a good premise to you? Comment below and let me know!
