I was looking for a new manga series to read and I wanted to order this series for my library. To my surprise, my library wouldn’t, but then I looked on Overdrive (oh, how I love you, Overdrive) and we had several volumes already. So, I made my way through what we had and have started requesting the rest to be bought.

Soma Yukihira’s old man runs a small family restaurant in the less savory end of town.  Aiming to one day surpass his father’s culinary prowess, Soma hones his skills day in and day out until one day, out of the blue, his father decides to enroll Soma in a classy culinary school!  Can Soma really cut it in a school that prides itself on a 10 percent graduation rate? And can he convince the beautiful, domineering heiress of the school that he belongs there at all?!

This first volume shows just how out of the box Soma’s thinking is and how this works for him to create amazing dishes. It also leads to him creating some not so amazing dishes. And once he proves to a developer that his family’s restaurant is worth keeping open, his father decides to close their restaurant to send Soma to a prestigious culinary school where he can further his skills.

I love this manga so much! I love the descriptions of the food, even the food that isn’t considered the most haute. I love Soma and his ambitions to someday beat his father in a cooking competition, and I love how all of this leads to Soma doing what is needed to become better.

What are some of your favourite things about manga? What do they express that novels cannot? Comment below and let me know!
