Hi guys! Today is Thursday and I have a really interesting topic for myself today. I have heard a lot of people, in a lot of different places, state that they don’t like science fiction because it’s written by a lot of old white men. Well, today, I’m going to introduce three authors who are persons of color that write science fiction.
- Justina Ireland. She’s the author of Dread Nation, an alternative history of the Civil War where those that die come back as zombies. I highly recommend it because it is amazing!
- Nnedi Okorafor. She is the author of short stories of Binti and Shuri, Black Panther and Wakanda Forever comics. She’s amazing and I flippin’ love Binti! I would highly recommend you start with Binti as it’s a short read but it has so much science fiction-y goodness!
- Claire O’Dell. She’s the author of The Janet Watson Chronicles, a feminist/black retelling of Sherlock Holmes set in the near future and it’s fantastic! I love retellings and this is a good one.
These are just a few science fiction authors who are not old white men, they are young black women. And there are more than young black women who write science fiction, but this is what I pulled for this time. I’ll be back to this in the future because I want to introduce more people to more authors of colors.
Who are some of your favourite authors who are not white or men? Why do you like them? Comment below and let me know!
