fruits basket 3In this third volume, we see the household of Shigure, Yuki, Kyo, and Tohru head out to the Sohma summer home to celebrate Golden Week. It’s a bit of a train wreck in more ways than one, but there are also some sweet moments as well.

Spring is in the air, and with spring comes break! When Shigure takes Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo to the Sohma’s vacation home to make the most of Golden Week, the inevitable game of cat and rat is already underway, with sparks flying between Yuki and Kyo. But leave it to Tohru to smooth things over! The peace doesn’t last, however, when another Sohma (or two?!) drops in!

But even a vacation can’t prepare the group for the surprise that awaits them upon their return. When a face from Kyo’s past makes an appearance, he lets a shocking secret about the cat out of the bag…

We meet a lot of new characters, new members of the Sohma family specifically. We meet Kisa, a little girl possessed by the spirit of the tiger and is brutally teased by her schoolmates for the difference in her hair color. We also meet the man that raised Kyo, another Sohma, but one who lived on the “outside,” but he does know about those that are possessed by the spirits, having trained many of them in martial arts.

Throughout this volume, we see Tohru and Kyo grow closer as well as Tohru and Yuki grow closer. We also see Tohru use her kindness and compassion to not only bring others out of their fury, but give them a reason to come out of their funk as well. She is so compassionate that she gives all the love that she feels to those that desperately need it, which the Sohmas seem to be missing in their life.

Overall I love how much the interactions the Sohmas have with Tohru seem to soften. The first time we meet each new member of the Sohma’s they are a bit brusque, rude, aloof; a few times after meeting Tohru though, they seemed to have calmed down and their edges have softened. It’s almost like she a human sized chill pill. Just, so calming.

Do you guys know a human sized chill pill? That one person that, once you’re in their presence, you feel as though a weight has been slightly lifted? Comment below and let me know!
