fruits basket 2This second volume, we see Tohru settle into living in the small Sohma household with Shigure, Yuki, and Kyo. Their daily antics, specifically those of Yuki and Kyo are just fun to watch, especially as Tohru tends to freak out at their fighting a little bit.

When she was living in a tent pitched on the Sohma family’s land, Tohru Honda’s primary concerns were dirt and slugs. But now that she’s living with the Sohmas, magical powers and ancient curses are the order of the day! With Yuki and Kyo at each other’s throats like cats and… rats, life at the Sohmas’ is lively enough, but it all heats up as Hatsuharu joins the fray, spoiling for a fight! And even before the new school year can get underway, the mystery surrounding the family escalates when Akito, head of the Sohma clan, confronts Tohru without warning…

The main thing you need to know is that Yuki is considered a “prince” at their school, and so with many other mangas with a “prince,” there is a Yuki-kun prince fan club, or whatever it’s called. They consider it their mission to protect Yuki from all those that would take advantage of him. Tohru has to make sure the fan club does not find out that she is living with Yuki. Which is hard to do sometimes, because they are crazy tenacious.

Tohru also has to figure out how to live with Shigure, who is an author/bit of a bum, and dealing with Yuki and Kyo’s constant fighting. Along with dealing with the fact that if she bumps or falls against any of these three guys, they’ll immediately turn into animals they are possessed by in the Chinese zodiac.

Overall, I just love the cuteness of this manga, it just super adorable! Tohru is what makes all of these interactions work. Otherwise, it would just be about three guys living together and that’s not a lot of fun to read. Have you guys read Fruits Basket? What do you think of the relationships? Comment below and let me know!

  1. Fruits Basket is my #1 shojo manga binge. I’m re-reading the series in anticipation for the anime reboot. I love Hatsuharu, and Tohru & Kyo are my OTP c:

This is also a reread series for me, I read it first back when I was in high school! I just thought it so cute and inventive that certain members of a family were possessed by the Chinese zodiac! And now I get to read it again in these beautiful collector’s editions thanks to my library! It brought back many fuzzy feels reading Tohru and Kyo’s story again, I love them so much! :3
