I have stated this time and time again on this site, but I absolutely LOVE retellings! I especially love dark retellings of fairy tales. This anthology was a surprise for me then, in that I found it! I loved all of the stories, and what I enjoyed, even more, was that there were some tall tales as well as some fairy tales in the mix. The first story was actually about Bluebeard, the man who had the seven wives and killed each of them. The way the story turned out, I loved it.
Throughout all of these stories, we see that the villains aren’t necessarily villains, the good guys are exactly the good guys, and that the stories we thought we knew get a new life. We get to see the stealing of Persephone, the reasons for why Bluebead had so many wives, how Cinderella came to be through the eyes of her fairy godmother, and we see what happens behind the scenes for many of those stories we thought we knew.
What are some of your favorite retellings? Do you seek out a particular one? Comment below and let me know!
