The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman
♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦
We start off in The Masked City where we left off in The Invisible Library, with Irene and Kai working to get important books back to The Library. They have established a working relationship in their version of London, and have done much since they have made this their realm.
Things start to go wrong though as soon as we start following them on their adventure. Kai is kidnapped by someone and taken from the realm. Irene is left alone, almost, and watched in London, along with Vale, their friend, and civilian detective. When Irene learns that Kai has been kidnapped by those who know his true identity and steal him away in order to do…something. This is what’s great about these books, we know only as much as the main character does, and we learn more about what’s going on as go along with her.
Irene figures out what has happened to Kai, where he has been taken, and who has taken him, more Fae. And they have taken him to a place that where Kai is essentially allergic to all the things, and it drains him of power. As Irene makes her way to this alternative Venice, yes Venice, she has to slightly rely on Lord Silver’s assistance, a Fae from the London where she and Kai were set up. But when she gets to Venice, she discovers that it is an eternal Carnival celebration. As she races around Venice in order to find Kai, she discovers that there is more going on here than just rescuing her kidnapped apprentice; rescuing Kai could mean deferring a war.
This book was an excellent follow up to The Invisible Library and it left me on such a cliffhanger! I need to know what’s going on and what will happen next! I need to own this series!
