When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

when dimple met rishiThis was such a cute book! Oh, my holy goodness! I love cute stories, but this was just so much cuter than I heartily expected. What’s so amazing about this book is that I’m sure everyone has gone through something LIKE this. Not sure about exactly like this, but something similar at least.

Dimple Shah has her whole life figured out. She’s been accepted to Standford, she’s going to study computer programming and focus on her career. She also knows that she’s nowhere near ready to even think about marriage. But coming from a traditional Indian family with her mother always trying to get her to fix her appearance and attract boys and find the “Ideal Indian Husband,” Dimple is more than ready to move out and be her own person. And she believes that her parents are giving her some breathing room as they let her go to a summer program for computer and app programming.

Rishi Patel is very much a hopeless romantic. He loves the story of how his parents met and he wants to have the same experience to tell his own future family. He feels it’s up to him to follow in his family’s footsteps and having an arranged marriage is part of that. He loves this part of his Indian heritage and is excited to get to know his future wife. Now, when he hears that he’s going to the same summer program as his future wife, and he’ll have to woo her throughout the course of the program, he is so excited!

Both Dimple and Rishi have their plans thrown out the window when they meet for the first time. Dimple has no idea who Rishi is, and Rishi doesn’t know how he messed up something so beautiful so quickly. As they both learn that Dimple’s parents didn’t quite tell her EVERYTHING that was to happen during the summer program, things dissolve even further between the two.

Rishi and Dimple couldn’t be more different in the way they think and the ways their live their lives. As they get to know each other though, could opposites attract? Or will it be like water and oil?

Either way, you read this book, it was so adorable! I love this book, I love the story, I love the characters, and I love the way the story unfolded. It wasn’t just about the possibility of an arranged marriage, but the passion Dimple has for her future career, the difficulty Rishi has in allowing himself to enjoy his art, and both of them figuring out not only how to deal with their families, but how to deal with each other as well. It’s everything that a teenage, almost coming of age, story is about. It’s about learning who you are and how this fits in with your life plan. This book handled all of these extremely well.

What story/book have you felt you could connect to extremely well? What story/book was that and why?
