Serpentine by Cindy Pon
♦ ♦ ♦ ♦
Now, this was an interesting book. Serpentine takes place in what feels like Ancient China when a handmaiden discovers that she is more than human. Or less than human, depending on how you want to look at it.
Skybright is a girl turning 16 years old and with that age brings changes she never thought she would be going through. She starts to wake up at night not covered in sweat, but with a snake tail instead. She learns about why she is starting to change, how it has to deal with her family who she didn’t know at all growing up.
Things all over the country though are starting to go to hell with the invasion of demons from the underworld. As Skybright learns more about herself, she learns what is happening to her country and how it all may just help her not only save her friend but herself.
This was such a good book, and it does end in such a way that leaves room for the next book in the series. I’m curious how the rest of the series will continue.
