I love retellings, and I love graphic novels, so this was a great adaptation!

Snow White: A Graphic Novel by Matt Phelan

Snow White A Graphic NovelIf you love fairy tale retellings, the flappers and the 1920’s, then you need to read this graphic novel. Snow White is the daughter of the King of Wall Street who was sent away by her stepmother, the Queen of Follies. The King of Wall Street manages to survive the crash of Wall Street, but he falls victim to a mysterious illness that kills him. Snow White is called back the school where her stepmother sent her to learn that she is heir to his entire estate. The Queen of Follies decides that to get what she believes is owed to her, she needs to kill Snow White.

There are seven brave protectors who look after Snow White for a small while and a poisoned apple makes its way to Snow White’s mouth. The Queen of Follies falls to her folly, and Snow White finds her prince.

I love this retelling! A Snow White that takes place during the 1920s where it would be plausible that a man of Wall Street survives the market crash in the 1920s, and marries a woman to give a mother to his only daughter. A woman who made her way up the rank of chorus girls to become a Broadway star, a woman who is believed to be the fairest of them all. It’s amazing how Matt Phelan not only captured the essence of the story of Snow White but gave it a beautiful background set in the 1920s,  but he set the stark view of good versus evil as well.
