The Dispatcher by John Scalzidispatcher

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

The Dispatcher by John Scalzi was a world binding book. I didn’t expect this book to do what it did, and I love it!

In a world where if you are murdered, you come back, there is a job that you can have. You can be a “dispatcher” which means for you, that you kill everyone every day. When you kill them though, 999 out of 1000, they come back, safe and sound in their own beds, as if nothing has ever happened to them. Whatever was killing them, it’s like it had never happened.

For Tony Valdez, this leads him down a path he knew would end up being dangerous. But when a friend goes missing, and a detective can’t get anywhere, she employs Tony to get where she can’t, and to help her find his missing friend. Things go awry, and we learn things about the world where no one can die unless they do it themselves.

If you couldn’t be murdered, would you think this would make the world better? Why or why not?
